In that note, when the required driver for audio output is not present or is now outdated, the system will simply stop producing sound. Updating the software for your sound device is the first port of call. Take them from the top until sound returns to your computer. You might not need to attempt all the above solutions.

Now, there are two primary reasons why this problem might occur. You won’t enjoy your PC very much when it does not play sounds, and neither can you use your microphone for voice input.
However, when you place your mouse over the Speaker icon, you see a message that says, ‘No audio output device is installed.’ What a bothersome sight. So, you think that you probably turned down the volume too low or set it to mute. You might see the Speaker icon in your taskbar with a red x on it. >change before your eyes. You notice that your computer is not playing any sound. You will receive some frightening error message that you should probably disregard. Under Model, scroll down until you see "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator". Be sure that "(Standard System Devices)" is selected under Manufacturer. The step I left out on prior trials: UNSELECT "Show Compatible Hardware" Select "Install from a list or specific location" Right click the ISAPNP device, and select "Update Driver" >repaired this problem, this device no longer appears.) >Read Data Port' device from the System Devices list. From Device Manager (be sure to select View/Show hidden devices), find the 'ISAPNP So here's another solution that worked for me.

I reinstalled all sound stuff and even went from onboard to sound card and still had no audio altho all drivers were installed. I had hd audio installed on xp but got no audio device.I wish I would have tried disable/enable sound first (just wondering). I see some people have got things to work some didnt.
You don't have to do anything, just go in device manager and find sound video and game controller then click on (+) button, you will get VIA high definition audio then go to the properties and then driver, and choose update driver, you will get two option, choose the second one, browse my computer for driver software, then in the next page you will see,let me pick from a list of device driver in my computer, you will get two option again, choose, high definition audio device, keep on looking in your audio icon in the monitor of your computer,if it changes, its okay if it doesn't then do same procedure and choose next one.But in my case it changed in the beginning, the audio icon didn't anymore showed no audio output device is installed, and I played ,there was sound passing through speaker but I didn't hear anything, then I again went through device manager and finally updated it after choosing the properties from sound video and game controller, then I got sound!!!!
